Extremadura is located in western Spain, near the border with Portugal. The landscape consists of wide hills, olive groves and enormous reservoirs, and it is the latter that have made the region one of Europe’s most exciting areas for predator fishing. Black bass is the main target here, but pike, zander and Comizo barbel can appear when you least expect it.
The trip at a glance
- Destination: Extremadura in western Spain, near the border with Portugal
- Season: March to December, best from September to November and April to May
- Species: black bass, pike, zander, Comizo barbel and catfish
- Method: lure fishing from bass boats with local guides
- Accommodation: three-bedroom apartment near the fishing grounds
- Travel: fly to Madrid, then rental car or transfer
The waters
The reservoirs are full of structure: flooded trees, drop-offs, rocks, rocky shoals and long bays where the fish patrol. This means the fishing can vary considerably from day to day. You fish from modern bass boats with local guides who know the lakes and understand how the fishing changes.

The species
- Black bass is the main species, with hard strikes and fast-paced action.
- Pike and zander often show up along drop-offs and around areas with trees.
- Comizo barbel, a powerful fish that makes the fishing different from what you are used to at home.
- Catfish are present in some waters and can come as a surprise.
When is the best time?
The season runs from March to December. September to November and April to May stand out as the best periods. The water temperature is right then, the bass are actively feeding and topwater fishing can continue well into autumn. This makes Extremadura a great way to extend the season when it has turned cold at home.
The climate is warm and dry for much of the year, with mild winters. Summer can get really hot, with long days on the water.

How the trip works
You fly to Madrid and continue through the Spanish interior towards Extremadura by rental car or pre-booked transfer. On the first evening, you have dinner together ahead of the fishing days. This is followed by full days of guided boat fishing, with the guides choosing the water and method according to the weather and water levels. You stay in a three-bedroom apartment near the fishing grounds, with wifi.
Away from the fishing, the region has a rich history influenced by both the Romans and the Moors, as well as small villages with tapas bars and local produce.
Who is it for?
If you enjoy perch fishing at home, much of it will feel familiar, but black bass takes it a step further with its fast, hard strikes. The trip suits both experienced predator anglers and those curious about bass fishing. We have written a separate guide to black bass techniques in Extremadura covering techniques and lures.
