Fishing in Lake of the Woods

Lake of the Woods is a classic musky water, but the beauty of the lake lies in its variety. There's also excellent fishing for walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass. With over 14,000 islands and numerous bays, channels, shoals, and rocky areas, there's plenty of water to explore and opportunities to vary your fishing throughout the week.

Musky – the lake's ultimate predator

For many anglers, the musky is the main reason to travel here. The Fish of 10,000 Casts has a reputation for requiring both patience and many casts, but Lake of the Woods is one of the classic waters for the species.

A large part of the fishing involves scouting the right structures and finding active fish. Follows are part of musky fishing, and a large fish can follow the bait all the way to the boat. When a musky finally decides to strike on a short line, it's a fishing experience that's hard to compare to anything else.

Walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass

Between musky sessions, there are plenty of opportunities to target other species. Walleye are fished around shoals, drop-offs, and rock structures, while pike are found throughout large parts of the lake, offering both quantity and trophy fish.

Smallmouth bass are another highlight. The fishing is active and well-suited for lighter tackle, using everything from jigs and crankbaits to topwater lures.

Fishing in the heart of the Canadian wilderness

Lake of the Woods is enormous, and the environment is a big part of the trip. Forested islands, rocky shores, narrow channels, and sheltered bays alternate, offering new areas to fish every day.

Fishing can be fully guided or combined with days on your own. Regardless of the setup, it's the mix of species, the abundance of fishable structures, and the vast Canadian wilderness that make Lake of the Woods such an interesting destination for anglers.

Accommodation and food

During the trip, you will stay at a classic Canadian fishing lodge in the middle of Lake of the Woods, with some of the lake's best fishing areas right outside the lodge. Here you live comfortably and have close access to the boats and the day's fishing.

After a long day on the lake, dinner and a relaxed evening at the lodge await. Food is an important part of the stay, with hearty breakfasts, dinners, and the classic Canadian shore lunch out on the lake.

The shore lunch, in particular, is an integral part of a fishing trip in Canada. The boat is moored at an island and lunch is prepared by the water before fishing continues.

It's a simple and well-thought-out arrangement for anglers. You stay right in the area you'll be fishing, eat well, and can spend most of your days out on Lake of the Woods.

Gear and bait

For Lake of the Woods, we recommend two setups: a heavier one for muskies and pike, and a lighter one for walleye and smallmouth bass.

For muskie fishing, an 8–9 ft rod with a casting weight of around 100–250 grams, combined with a heavy low-profile or baitcasting reel, is suitable. 80–100 lb braided line and a strong steel or fluorocarbon leader are good choices. The large lures and the power of a large muskie place high demands on the equipment.

For walleye and smallmouth bass, much lighter equipment is sufficient. A spinning or casting rod around 7–7.6 ft with a casting weight of approximately 10–40 grams covers most of the fishing. Braided line with a fluorocarbon leader works well for most methods.

Lures

Muskies are primarily fished with large soft plastic baits, jerkbaits, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures. An important part of the fishing is the classic figure eight alongside the boat, where a following muskie can often be triggered to strike.

For walleye, jigs are mainly used, but blade baits, dropshot, and vertical jigging can also be effective depending on the conditions.

Smallmouth bass are fished with tubes, Ned rigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, and topwater lures, among others. Pike readily take larger soft plastic baits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and spoons.

In other words, with two well-considered setups, you will cover a large portion of the fishing during the week.
