Gear and bait
For Lake of the Woods, we recommend two setups: a heavier one for muskies and pike, and a lighter one for walleye and smallmouth bass.
For muskie fishing, an 8–9 ft rod with a casting weight of around 100–250 grams, combined with a heavy low-profile or baitcasting reel, is suitable. 80–100 lb braided line and a strong steel or fluorocarbon leader are good choices. The large lures and the power of a large muskie place high demands on the equipment.
For walleye and smallmouth bass, much lighter equipment is sufficient. A spinning or casting rod around 7–7.6 ft with a casting weight of approximately 10–40 grams covers most of the fishing. Braided line with a fluorocarbon leader works well for most methods.
Lures
Muskies are primarily fished with large soft plastic baits, jerkbaits, bucktails, spinnerbaits, and topwater lures. An important part of the fishing is the classic figure eight alongside the boat, where a following muskie can often be triggered to strike.
For walleye, jigs are mainly used, but blade baits, dropshot, and vertical jigging can also be effective depending on the conditions.
Smallmouth bass are fished with tubes, Ned rigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits, and topwater lures, among others. Pike readily take larger soft plastic baits, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and spoons.
In other words, with two well-considered setups, you will cover a large portion of the fishing during the week.
Simms ColdWeather Shirt - Dolomite Logan Plaid / S is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
