About the fishing trip

Fly fishing in Iceland

Iceland has some of Europe’s most varied waters for fly fishing for trout, Arctic char, salmon, and sea trout. There’s everything from classic salmon rivers and technical trout waters to smaller streams, lakes, and remote areas where fishing takes center stage.

We don’t offer a set package for Iceland; instead, we build your trip around how you want to fish. If you’d like a high-standard lodge, a guide every day, all meals, and private transfers, we can arrange that. If you’d rather keep costs down, your trip can be planned with self-catering, a rental car, and fishing on your own. And anything in between is possible too, with a mix of guided days and fishing on your own.

Tell us what kind of fishing you’re looking for, how much service you’d like, and what your budget is, and we’ll put together your fishing trip to Iceland from there.

We take you to some of Iceland’s most exciting waters for fly fishing for trout, Arctic char, salmon, and sea trout.

Iceland is known for its strong wild fish stocks, and the fishing can vary greatly depending on where you are and when you travel during the season. One day you might fish dry flies to rising trout in a river, and the next, fish nymphs for Arctic char in a smaller body of water or target larger fish with streamers in deeper stretches.

With the right waters, a well-planned itinerary, and the flexibility to tailor both guiding and accommodation, Iceland is a destination just as suited to experienced fly fishers as it is to those looking to discover trout and Arctic char fishing for the first time.

Fly fishing in Iceland

We run fishing trips all over Iceland, but many of our itineraries focus on northern Iceland and the area around Akureyri. There is a wide variety of rivers, smaller streams and lakes here, where you can fish for brown trout, Arctic char, salmon and sea trout, depending on the season and the type of trip you are looking for.

Around Akureyri and in northern Iceland, we work with waters including Mýrarkvísl í Reykjahverfi, Reykjadalsá, Laxá í Aðaldal, Litlaá and Earthquake Lake, as well as Lónsá on Langanes. Further south, we can also include fishing at places such as Þingvallavatn, known for its large brown trout.

Some waters we fish

Mýrarkvísl & Reykjadalsá

Mýrarkvísl and Reykjadalsá offer classic northern Iceland fly fishing in small to medium-sized rivers. Much of the experience is about reading the currents, finding the fish and adapting your presentation to the conditions that day.

These waters offer fishing for both trout and char, and are well suited to anyone who enjoys active fishing, moving between different pools and stretches throughout the day.

Laxá í Aðaldal

Laxá í Aðaldal is one of the best-known river systems in northern Iceland. Here, you’ll find larger waters, faster currents and big trout.

Dry-fly fishing can be a big part of the experience when conditions are right, while nymphs and streamers offer more options when water levels, temperatures or fish activity change.

Litlaá & Earthquake Lake

Litlaá and Earthquake Lake let you combine river fishing and lake fishing in the same fishing day.

This makes for a trip where techniques, presentations and fishing styles can change from hour to hour, and is a great fit for anyone looking to experience different sides of Icelandic trout and char fishing.

Lónsá on Langanes

Lónsá lies on the Langanes Peninsula and offers a more remote experience where both the fishing and the natural surroundings are a big part of the adventure.

Here, you’ll get away from the more popular areas and fish in a setting where the distances, landscape and tranquillity contribute just as much as the time spent on the water.

Þingvallavatn

For those looking to target truly large trout, there’s also the option to include Þingvallavatn in your trip.

The lake offers a very different type of fishing from the smaller rivers in northern Iceland, with larger waters, wider areas and stronger fish demanding different equipment and techniques.

We build your trip around the fishing you’re looking for

We don’t offer a single fixed itinerary in Iceland. Instead, we choose the waters, accommodation, guiding and transport based on the season, target species, budget and how much support you’d like during your trip.

The aim is to create a trip tailored to the fishing you want to experience, rather than trying to fit everyone into the same package.

Accommodation from cabins to castles

In Iceland, accommodation can be a big part of the overall experience, but it doesn’t have to be.

We work with everything from exclusive lodges offering a high level of service and included meals to simpler anglers’ cabins and self-catering accommodation for those who would rather put more of their budget toward the fishing itself.

Would you like to stay somewhere simple, prepare your own meals, and make the most of your time and money on the water? Or are you looking for a complete experience where the accommodation, food, and service match the standard of the fishing?

Tell us what matters most to you, and we’ll tailor the accommodation and trip arrangements accordingly.

Self-catering meals to three-course dinners

Just like with the accommodation, meals can be tailored to suit the kind of trip you have in mind.

This could be a simple self-catering arrangement, where you take care of breakfast, lunch and dinner yourself, or a full-board option that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Passport and visa information for Iceland

Swedish citizens do not need a visa to travel to Iceland, but must carry a valid passport or national ID card

Facts about the country

Iceland is a volcanic island republic in the North Atlantic with approximately 390,000 residents, most of whom live in the capital, Reykjavik. The country is known for its dramatic landscape, including glaciers and active volcanoes. It has been an independent parliamentary democracy since 1944 and is home to the world’s oldest parliament, the Althing, founded in 930.

Is there Wi-Fi on site?

It depends on where you’re staying. Most lodges include Wi-Fi, while connectivity may be more limited in cabins and remote areas. If you want to make sure you have coverage, we recommend an eSIM or local SIM card. We’ll let you know what to expect when we put together your trip.

How do you fish in Iceland?

Dry flies and light nymphs are often key techniques. Much of it comes down to reading the water, finding active fish, and adapting your technique to the weather, water levels, and hatches.

What are the weather and climate like in Iceland?

  • Temperature: It is cool but pleasant. Daytime temperatures are usually between 10°C and 15°C, but can sometimes reach around 20°C. Nights are cold, often around 5-10°C.
  • Unpredictable: The weather can change quickly, from sunshine to rain and wind in just a few minutes ("four seasons in one day").
  • Midnight sun: From June to July, it is almost light around the clock.
  • Precipitation: Rain is common, but often comes as brief showers rather than lasting all day. June is usually the driest month.
  • Wind: It is often windy, which can make it feel significantly colder than the thermometer indicates.
