When is the best season for halibut fishing in Norway?

The best period for halibut fishing in Northern Norway is generally from May to October, but exactly when the fishing is at its best varies between different areas.

During May and June, halibut often move into shallower areas, and the fishing can be very good. June, July, and August are popular months with long fishing days and good conditions for targeted halibut fishing.

Even late summer and autumn can offer excellent fishing. September and October are interesting months when halibut are still active, and there are good opportunities for both good numbers of fish and really large specimens. During autumn, the days get shorter and the weather more varied, which can affect the number of possible fishing days.

In short, the main season for halibut in Northern Norway extends from May to October, with different parts of the season offering slightly different conditions.

Where do you find halibut?

Finding the right area is a big part of halibut fishing. Halibut especially like sandy and gravel bottoms, preferably combined with edges, depressions, shallow peaks, and other changes in the bottom structure.

Particularly interesting are sounds, headlands, and areas where the tide creates currents. Baitfish gather here, and halibut can be strategically positioned to hunt.

Halibut can be fished both very shallow and at significantly greater depths. Under the right conditions, you can find fish in just a few meters of water, while other fishing takes place at 50–100 meters or more. The depth you should look for therefore depends greatly on the area, time of year, and conditions.

Equipment and baits

For halibut fishing, we recommend a relatively short and powerful sea fishing rod of about 5.7 feet, along with a robust reel and braided line. The shorter rod provides good control over the bait and plenty of power when a large halibut needs to be brought to the boat. Slightly longer rods also work well, but we prefer the shorter model for targeted halibut fishing.

For jig fishing, large shads and jigs weighing about 300–600 grams are often used. Adjust the weight according to depth, current, and how fast the boat is drifting. Natural bait, especially coalfish, is also a really effective alternative.

Much of the fishing takes place on a drift. A speed of around 0.5–1 knot is often a good starting point, but the most important thing is that you can present the bait controllably and maintain contact with it.

How to fish

Start at the bottom and then fish the bait up through the water column. Gently tap the jig on the bottom a few times, reel up, and work it with calm movements.

Vary how high you fish. Halibut are not always on the bottom. A fish can follow the jig far up into the open water before deciding to strike.

Therefore, it’s important to fish all the way up and not just work the bottom few meters. Sometimes the bite comes directly over the bottom, sometimes halfway up, and sometimes right under the boat.
