Bass fishing in Sardinia: the lake, the season and life at the hotel

Black bass were introduced to Sardinia as early as the 19th century. With its warm climate, abundant baitfish and plenty of crayfish, it has become an established population, and today you can experience bass fishing in the same way as in the USA and Japan, just a few hours' flight from home.

The trip at a glance

  • Destination: a lake in Sardinia with a 4-star hotel and pool
  • Best time: April, June and September to October
  • Species: black bass, most weighing 0.5 to 2 kilos
  • Method: jon boats with electric motors, local guide on the first day
  • Groups: 1 to 5 people
  • Getting there: fly to Costa Smeralda and approximately 40 minutes by car

The lake

The lake is medium-sized, with a maximum depth of around 10 metres, but most fishing takes place in shallow water, at depths of 0–5 metres. The bass hunt along rocky structures, shoals, fallen trees and in sheltered bays. Many fish weigh between 0.5 and 2 kilos, and several fish over both 2 and 3 kilos are caught every year.

The boats

You fish from jon boats with electric motors, aluminium boats with casting decks that make it easy to sneak along the edges and cast close to structure. On the first day of fishing, you have a local guide who takes you around the lake and goes through the techniques that are working at the time. After that, you fish independently, and if you would like a guide for more days, this can be arranged.

The season

  • April marks the start of the truly excellent bass season. The water warms up, the fish become more active and move into shallow water.
  • June offers active fishing in warm water. It can get very hot in the middle of the day, so we prefer to fish in the morning and evening and relax by the pool in between.
  • September and October are the most comfortable months. The temperatures are more pleasant, you can fish from morning to evening, and the water is still warm.

The hotel and food

You stay at a 4-star hotel built in traditional Sardinian style, with views of the lake, a pool, and rooms with air conditioning. The restaurant uses ingredients from nearby farms. You have breakfast at the hotel, take the packed lunch with you out on the lake, and dinner is a set menu of Sardinian dishes: homemade pasta, fish, cold cuts, meat, cheese, and vegetables. Upon request, we can arrange visits to local wine and food producers.

The trip

You fly to Costa Smeralda and drive a rental car for approximately 40 minutes to the hotel. From the hotel, it is about 20 minutes to the boats. We welcome groups of 1–5 people and are happy to tailor trips for larger groups. It is also possible to add sea fishing for tuna and mahi-mahi.

Lures and rigs have their own guide to black bass fishing in Sardinia.
